Online Fashion Retailer ASOS Profits Surge As Overseas Sales Boosted By Weak Pound

Online fashion retailer Asos has reported record annual sales and profits, boosted by the weak pound and a "strong international performance".
Pre-tax profits jumped by 145% to £80m in the 12 months to 31 August, compared with £32.7m last year.Retail sales rose by about a third to £1,88bn.

Asos, which targets people in their twenties, also said it had upgraded its outlook for sales growth in the current financial year.It now expects sales to grow by 25-30%.

Growing overseas

Asos said that UK sales rose by 16% in the past year while international sales shot up by 47% as they were helped by the weaker pound. The retailer exports more than it imports and the drop in sterling since the UK's Brexit referendum in June 2016 has boosted the company's international sales and allowed it to cut prices.

It added that sales growth was "once again driven by strong product, proposition improvements and further price investments across major markets".The website attracted 135.7 million visits during August 2017 compared with 117.5 million in August last year.By 31 August, Asos said it had 15.4 million active customers, with 5.2 million in the UK and 10.2 million elsewhere.

"It's been a great year for Asos, with continued growth in sales and profits," said chief executive Nick Beighton."Our international performance was excellent, as we reinvested foreign exchange tailwinds and benefitted from our continually improving customer proposition."

African Cashgate Scandal: Fiction at its finest

The Man Booker Prizes were created to reward the finest in fiction, and to bring great books to avid readers. Starting this year, the 11-year-old Man Booker International Prize will be awarded annually for a single book, translated into English and published in the UK. As such, it mirrors the long-established Man Booker Prize for fiction which does the same for a book written in English.

The Man Group has sponsored the original prize since 2002 and the international prize since it was started in 2005. The symmetrical relationship between the two prizes will ensure that “Man Booker” can now honour fiction on a global basis - the name will be synonymous with choosing the year’s very best books in English.

But, given that only a tiny percentage of novels in English have been translated from another language, is it really worth all this effort?

The short answer is yes. The extraordinary success of Karl Ove Knausgård and Elena Ferrante in recent years is proof that fiction from other lands has a global following. Last year a new report from Literature Across Frontiers (LAF) finally put some figures on this. The statistics show a steady growth of literary translations over the past two decades, both in absolute numbers and as a share of the whole. The number of literary translations into English grew by two-thirds between 1990 and 2012, accounting for a peak of 5.23% of the whole in 2011 against an average of just 3%. Specialist foreign-fiction publishers, such as Quercus, Pereine and Pushkin, have all sprung up in the past decade or so.

Secrets of A Successful Job Interview

Is it time in your career to look for a new job? Do you have that interview already lined up? Here are some modern, counterintuitive takes on having a successful interview. The world has changed; so has job hunting. Be ready, and good luck!

1. Train Like An Olympian: Malcolm Gladwell was wrong; it isn’t about 10,000 hours, it’s about 10,000 (more or less) smart hours. If you’ve got a lot riding on an interview, think of it like a race or a meet. How much are you willing to prep for it? Now, make that prep smart by visualizing a successful outcome and running that little video in your head over and over so that when the moment finally does come it’s familiar, you’re cool, and you are on top of your game.

2. Google Yourself: Your interviewer is going to Google you. So do it first, and if there’s stuff you don’t like, flood the feed with positive stuff that counterbalances the not-so-good. What you can’t fix, be ready to explain. The real work should begin six months or even a year before you try for that new job. Start your thought leadership by snagging your own website and starting to blog on a topic in your industry that you’re passionate about. You’d be amazed at the power of an already-existing track record of thoughtful commentary in your field to an interviewer.

3. Structure Your Answer: Most people think of a job interview as a passive experience. The interviewer asks questions, you answer them. Answer them well and confidently and you’ve got a job. Something like that.

Instead, think of the interview as a chance for a guided conversation you run on the subject you want to talk about: how you’re going to make a difference to this new organization. Have five points to make and be prepared to give both a quick answer and a longer answer on each of the five points. The longer answers are for follow up questions and comments.

Of course, you’re going to do some listening too -- do your homework on the organization so that you can anticipate the questions the interviewer is going to ask.

4. Be Ready To Brag: Don’t be obnoxious, but don’t be shy either. At least a couple of those five points should showcase how you’ve made a difference somewhere else, in a way that is arguably analogous to the new organization. What problems have you solved? What insights have you had that led to new processes, more efficient processes, new products, and so on? If you haven’t solved any problems anywhere, then get started.

5. Focus Your Emotions: Spend a few minutes before the actual interview focusing on your mental state. Pick an emotion – a positive one – and remember a time when you naturally felt it. Put yourself in that memory and frame of mind as strongly as possible. With a little practice, you can learn to exclude the mental distractions that most of us experience most of the time. You’ll walk into the interview excited, passionate, happy, up – whatever your focus is. That way, you’ll be the one the interviewer remembers – because your emotion was strong, you were fully present, and it all clicked for you, just like in your mental movie.

Never just wing a job interview. With some thoughtful preparation, you can improve the experience – and

Economy still an accountant

Companies like ride-hailing app Lyft, errands-helper TaskRabbit and the digital crafts market Etsy have boomed in recent years as the gig economy has taken off. Advances in technology, specifically mobile technology like mobile banking, advanced GPS capabilities and better video conferencing abilities have unlocked the potential for a vast self-employed market. In tandem with this growth, accounting software providers and sagacious app developers have tried to address these workers’ inevitable accounting needs with simple, easy-to-use money tracking tools. However, the solutions may not be up to the task of helping non-accountants make the most out of their income.

A recent survey from ReportLinker found that while 74 percent of the U.S. working population have full-time, traditional employment, one in ten employees have now joined the gig economy as independent contractors of some kind. A third of survey respondents said they would consider joining this new workforce, and two-thirds said they would consider the option within the next three years. With this intense growth of self-employed individuals comes a rising need for them to manage their financial lives independently – and a Lyft driver or a TaskRabbiter does not necessarily have the skill to do so.

In all honesty, so-called gig economy workers are no different from being a consultant, a type of profession that has been around for a long time, Chandra Bhansali, founder and CEO of cloud-based accounting technology company AccountantsWorld, told me. Consultants still have to take care of the basic task of making sure they meet all federal, state and local tax regulations, and that is a very important aspect of why they need to talk to an accountant.

There is plenty of accounting software out there that is ostensibly ready for use by small-business owners who don’t have an accounting background, as well as contract workers. For instance, QuickBooks Self-Employed is a simple version of the well-known accounting software geared towards freelance workers, solopreneurs and other gig-type workers. Since its launch, QuickBooks Self-Employed has partnered with several companies operating in the gig economy space, including Lyft, TaskRabbit and Etsy, allowing their contractors to perform basic accounting with the pared-down version of QB’s more powerful accounting software. As of Intuit’s last quarterly earnings statement in November 2016, QB Self-Employed had 110,000 subscribers. For context, Intuit research estimates that 3.9 million Americans are working in the on-demand economy, and that by 2020 that number will rise to 7.7 million.

But how far can a non-accountant take their solo business with a tool like QB Self-Employed? Not very, Bhansali thinks.

Many of these gig economy workers have no idea what tax season has in store for them, he said. The nuances involved with filing taxes on freelance work can be overwhelming for even the most experienced independent workers, let alone the large number of new workers who must now report on new incomes, and report it correctly. So, where should these taxpayers turn for advice and guidance through filing season? Only an accountant will be fully versed on all of the loopholes and pitfalls that can quietly catch people in big problems with the IRS.

There is another side to the software story that QuickBooks can tell. QuickBooks has the power of Intuit behind it, which was founded more than three decades ago and in 2015 pulled in revenues of $4.2 billion. The company has a robust support team behind every product it releases, and therein lies a significant part of its value to consumers. However, other companies that have tried to address the accounting needs of independent workers have not been as successful. Take the Bonsai Tax app, which was intended to address the tax problem Bhansali notes. It was created by a CPA, and it linked a 1099 worker’s bank account to the app. A user would swipe left on an expense to signify that it was personal, and right for business. The company shut down in four months, with the founder citing lack of adequate knowledge among the user base to correctly classify expenses.

Record-keeping is important, Bhansali said. So you’re self-employed, and say you’re going to file, say, a Schedule C. What are the business-related deductions you can make? An accountant will be helpful in determining deductions you’re entitled to, and what kind of record-keeping you have to do to deduct those expenses. Tech tools like QuickBooks Self-Employed are definitely useful. But I don’t think they’re sufficient. They will help you do a good amount of work yourself, but they are not a substitute for advice from a professional.

Bhansali correctly noted that the gig economy is not a new phenomenon. 1099 workers are consultants, nothing more, nothing less – and the boom in this type of worker is providing opportunity for accountants, who also work very well in a consultancy capacity, to find new clients. They have a key role to play in the rise of the contract worker.

How Does a Clutch Work in a Manual Transmission?

The clutch in a car transmission is what works to engage and disengage the drive shaft’s moving parts. In a manual transmission, the driver has to manipulate a pedal or a lever in order to shift gears. The clutch is what allows the gears to engage or disengage.

How a clutch works

The clutch consists of the flywheel, pressure plate, disc, and throwout bearing and release system. The flywheel spins along with the motion of the engine. The pressure plate, which is bolted to the flywheel, holds the clutch assembly together. The disc is located between the flywheel and pressure plate, and allows the pressure plate and the flywheel to both make and break contact. And finally, the throw-out bearing and the release system work in conjunction to allow the clutch to engage and to disengage.

In a manual automobile transmission, the input shaft sends engine power to the car wheels by means of the gears. The input shaft, which runs through the middle of the disk, flywheel and pressure plate, has a bearing that takes most of the load of the shaft. There is another, smaller bearing in the middle of the flywheel that serves to center the shaft so that it can rotate along with the engaging and disengaging of the clutch assembly. The clutch disc is connected to this assembly.

When the driver presses the clutch pedal, the disc, pressure plate and flywheel are disengaged so that the driver can shift gears. When the pedal is up, the components are engaged and the vehicle is in motion.

Mbp Bearings:Taper Roller Bearings Exporter India

The inner and outer ring raceways are segments of cones and the rollers are also made with a taper so that the conical surfaces of the raceways and the roller axes if projected, would all meet at a common point on the main axis of the bearing.>

This conical geometry is used as it gives a larger contact patch, which permits greater loads to be carried than with spherical (ball) bearings, while the geometry means that the tangential speeds of the surfaces of each of the rollers are the same as their raceways along the whole length of the contact patch and no differential scrubbing occurs. When a roller slides rather than rolls, it can generate wear at the roller-to-race interface, i.e. the differences in surface speeds creates a scrubbing action. Wear will degenerate the close tolerances normally held in the bearing and can lead to other problems. Much closer to pure rolling can be achieved in a tapered roller bearing and this avoids rapid wear.

The rollers are guided by a flange on the inner ring. This stops the rollers from sliding out at high speed due to their momentum. The larger the half angles of these cones the larger the axial force that the bearing can sustain.Tapered roller bearings are separable and have the following components: outer ring, inner ring, and roller assembly (containing the rollers and a cage). The non-separable inner ring and roller assembly is called the cone, and the outer ring is called the cup. Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup.
